Designing and building the full experience for a bold diving competition.


 

Red Bull, a long-standing client of my team at Nativo, consistently brought us exciting, crazy, fun design challenges. This one was definitely the largest. Red Bull Cliff Diving, an event hosted in a different exotic location every year, sees divers diving a terrifying 27 meters. 2014’s event was getting even bolder—Red Bull was going to get away with hosting it in Havana, Cuba. We were asked to design the full event experience.

The Solution

The over-arching visual language for the event was a modern take on the Cuban flag—a symbol of massive pride for the local community, and the sign of a bright future to come for Cuba. The language showed up most powerfully in the design of the diving board itself, which had to work alongside the existing Cliff Diving logo. Further event materials consisted of event way finding and environmental graphics, divers’ apparel and welcome gifts, print material, and trophies.

My Role

My role on this project spanned across multiple focus areas. I partnered with a fellow Art Director in developing the visual language and executing across all applications. I lead the design of the event experience and flow, and was also the lead vendor contact and developed a comprehensive production guide for build teams to reference on-site.
